visiting author to es students - you are the future
WAB Elementary students enjoyed a week-long visit from yet another incredible writer in January – the first children’s non-fiction writer to visit the school.
Kelly Milner Halls, the author of a wide variety of children’s books on topics including dinosaurs, the Hoover Dam and mythological creatures, spent five days talking to students, teachers and parents about her writing. Her messages were both inspiring and informative.
“You are the future of tomorrow. You are the hope,” Kelly told the students. “That’s why I work so hard on my books for you.”
One of Kelly’s biggest challenges was when she was asked to write a fiction book based on the true story of the construction of the Hoover Dam in the United States. She spent time researching stories, journals, documentaries and historical records of the project, identifying major role players and then developing them into fictional characters.
When it came to the several stories she published about animals, she told the students that her work was the result of personal passions and interests.
“I write about weird things I love. I loved dinosaurs,” Kelly said. “So I wrote about them.” It’s as simple as that.
Kelly encouraged students to follow their own passions, whether they involve researching topics and writing books, or becoming a doctor or engineer.
Her books about dinosaurs became the beginning of a long list of animal stories that Kelly eventually published. Each one of them involved hours upon hours of research fueled by her desire to teach and empower children.
“Old people like me,” Kelly told an auditorium full of students, “we made a lot of mistakes. You will be the ones who will find a way to help our species survive.”
Kelly Milner Halls is the author of more than 30 titles, specifically for children and young adults. To see pictures from her visit, go to my.wab.edu/media. To learn more about her work, visit her website at www.wondersofweird.com.
