Reviews
“From the immediacy of the opening paragraph, readers enter into the world of the luxurious ship, the Titanic. Details bring that fateful voyage to life. Rather than details out of context, they are effortlessly woven into the narrative. Photos, diagrams, documents, glossary, and bibliography will provide a deep dive for readers. The layout and format also will serve as a model for writing.”
―Dr. Teri S. Lesesne, distinguished professor of library science
“Secret fires, ping pong balls, and inaccessible binoculars? Kelly Milner Halls covers the story of the Titanic you know with the details you didn't and sets up a first-rate mystery for kids in the process.”
―Elizabeth Byrd, Publishers Weekly columnist and author
"Kudos to author Kelly Milner Halls for telling an oft-told story, the wreck of the Titanic, in an engaging and creative way. By teasing out the mysteries around why and how the ship sank, Halls has crafted a gripping nonfiction tale for young readers. Was it cost-cutting on rivets or a coal fire that weakened the hull where the iceberg struck? Was the ship going too fast, or did a thermal inversion caused by warm and cold currents colliding make it hard to see the obstacle? One thing is for sure: young readers with a taste for disaster (and mysteries) will gobble this book right up.”
―Bruce Hale, author of Clark the Shark
“Kelly Milner-Halls takes readers on an intimate behind-the-scenes tour of the Titanic. From the conflicts among people tasked to design and build her, to the flaws that lead to her demise, this well-researched history will keep you on the edge of your seat.”
―Christine Taylor-Butler, award-winning author of children's nonfiction
Absolutely wonderful telling of the whole story of the Titanic. Halls starts with the building of the ship and ends with the finding of the ship, the recovery of artifacts and how we can get a look at the Titanic. What could be a dull read was made fascinating through photographs, quotes, and fun facts interspersed. Halls writing style is just right for even the most reluctant reader. Bravo!
